God is really only another artist. He invented the giraffe, the elephant and the cat. He has no real style, He just goes on trying other things.

It’s hard to believe, but almost 10 years have passed since I first started working on this cat book project. When I went through my files, I found a lot of pages that had been written on an IBM Selectric mixed in with the computer print outs. Scary.

I don’t know why it has taken me so long to get back to this. As I looked over my old notes and clippings, I found myself just as interested as ever, and even a lot of the research didn’t seem all that dated.

So what happened?

I guess I gave up after shopping a book proposal around and finding out that, against all odds, I couldn’t find a publisher for a cat book. It’s not as if I’d been peddling a short story collection or a volume of verse. The really astounding thing was that the editors who were most dismissive were fellow cat owners! The one editor who really got what I was trying to do had grown up in a home where she hadn’t been allowed to have a pet. And, she told me, if she ever did get one it would have to be a dog!

The good news, for me if not for those editors, who are all probably hanging on by a thread about now, is that publishing is in such shambles that there’s no point in waiting for someone to come to their senses and publish my book. I’m just going to make a place for it right here. I’m going to do it exactly the way I want, and, I’m hoping, if I build it they will come.
